We might be in with a chance.

The rain falls as the weekend rolls along. Today is Den vítězství or Liberation or Victory Day, the day we celebrate kicking the nazis out on their asses at the end of WWII. It used to be celebrated on the 9th, to commemorate the day the Red Army showed up to liberate/help with the process of liberating, but they changed it in 1989 to suit the new politics of the time. Along with other nations, also celebrated in France, and they, in a manner entirely appropriate for the holiday and time of year, as well as for being basic decent humans, voted against electing a far right nationalist in their recent election. I quite approve. So good on em. Could this just mean the trend is broken? Might we not be quite doomed yet? Time can only tell, but take note rest of world, please don't fuck up now.

It's a good result in France, but it still highlights the growing popularity of the far right.

Here in the UK, if UKIP attained such a big slice of the vote, we'd be shitting ourselves.

It's best the far right are kept as far away as possible, so much so, they're referred to as the far distant right!

yes, well it's not the best possible result, but considering people were thinking Le Pen was in with a chance, it's certainly better. I agree with you there, I mean, ideally there wouldn't be such a thing as these parties, or at least they'd be some lone nutter that have the support of a few ranting nutcases, whose ranting is limited to the internet from their stereotypical basement while indulging in these "cheetohs" that seem to be so popular with that demographic. And that would be it, no more. Unfortunately they have a significant presence in many parts of the world and are even president of some of the world. Dark times. I'm just hoping that there's something to signs and portents (whatever that really means and if it doesn't mean anything in context sorry I just like the sound of it) and this is the reversal of the trend we (and by we I mean the mostly Anglo Western world ) have been seeing.

ok so I mean the opposite of portent, I think

Donald Trump! Hehe! One can only watch in amazement, and see how things develop :)

Yes, it's sort or a you have to laugh or you'll cry situation. I mean, on the positive side he's oh so easy to laugh at, the negative is the potential for apocalyptic disaster, for all of us poor sods on earth. I'd honestly prefer someone just a tad less funny.

Surely it can't be as bad as it first looks. Presidents tend not to be autocratic, especially for any real serious action. The time to worry is if he gets to dismantle the political legislature, whose very job it is to introduce a bit of common sense into the governing process. I doubt these bodies will clap their hands exclaiming, "yay, what a great idea.... let's push the red button!"

But I could be wrong! Bwoooooah!

I don't think he'll blow up the world exactly, there will be people to stop that, but could cause stuff to escalate and just make shit worse, for America and being such a big and powerful fucking nation it will affect all of us. It's just as well he's not considerably more clever, I mean, so far he hasn't managed to get so much done, I don't think he realized being President isn't like being a king. I think he still doesn't realize.

Well, we have to rely on the good sense of the rest of the world, and hope they realise, in terms of political diplomacy, the man is a buffoon. And I'm sure in quick time he'll fuck up his own economy to the extent even his most ardent supporters will desert him. Sounds like a likely outcome, you think? Best stay positive, eh? *bites fingernails(

yeah, let's just hope, and try not to drink so much

I'll drink to that!
